After battling a dangerous disease like cancer, 61-year-old radio show host Gordon Sparks died suddenly near British Columbia.

The athletics commentator and presenter of BBC Radio Devonshire’s breakfast show, known locally as Sparky, died at St Luke’s Hospital in Plymouth.

Gordon Sparks was who?

Originally from Devon, in the south-east of England, Gordon Sparks was an experienced presenter for BBC Radio. Sparks, born in 1961, is best known for hosting the BBC Radio Exeter Breakfast Show. Additionally, he had been a game commentator for Plymouth Argyle for just 32 years.

Sparks was an avid Plymouth Argyle FC fan as a Plymouth native. His slightly partisan analysis of the games broadcast on BBC Radio Devon shows this quite clearly. Before leaving radio due to health problems, he had a long career.

Death of Gordon Sparks:

The sports commentator and presenter of BBC Radio Devon’s breakfast show, known locally as Sparky, died suddenly at St Luke’s Hospital in Plymouth. For 32 years, Sparks worked as a game commentator for Plymouth Argyle FC and ran the train’s breakfast show for many years.

Sparks said in his last tweets on Twitter that his tumor had “slightly grown”.

The antibiotics weren’t working in the lungs. A transplanted liver tumour. Soon also transferred to the Hospice Saint-Luc for several weeks or even a few short months, according to what I was told.

Sparks thanked the nurses on the unit in her last tweet. The radio personality has received numerous accolades.

People who show love:

Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies MBE hailed him “the sporting face of Plymouth”, while Bastille percussionist Chris Wood said he was “very disgusted”.

He will always play an important role in the Argyle saga and, for many decades, the voice that brought us all together across the airwaves. A more beautiful person and an irreplaceable skill, according to Mr. Wood.

Gordon played every one of those parts, but his portrayal as a true professional is what I will remember him for.

According to Stephanie Marshall, director of BBC South and South West, it is a very sad day for BBC Radio Devon. Our prayers and thoughts are now with Gordon’s close friends, family and fans. “Gordon was a broadcast legend; he was honest and courageous in the worst circumstances.
