Popular show doesn’t mean Hungarians accept gays: CE
Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Tuesday dismissed the idea that the popularity of a local television series involving gay romance suggests a growing acceptance of homosexuality in Hong Kong, saying the issue is still “very, very controversial.”
ViuTV Love of Ossan, which depicts a love triangle between three men, turned out to be a big hit with viewers, and reporters asked Lam if this shows that Hong Kong people are more and more accepting of same-sex relationships and that it might be time for legislation to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
But Lam said there was still no consensus on the issue of gay rights in Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong is a rather pluralistic society. We must not discriminate against people with these sexual orientations or make malicious comments about them. But we have to understand that Hong Kong society has no consensus to give them legal status or other rights, ”she said.
“It’s always a very, very controversial issue,” Lam added.
The EC said she had never seen the ViuTV show, but could recommend people to watch The glory of youth – a prime-time drama broadcast on RTHK about mainland soldiers in the PLA rocket force.
“I encourage everyone to watch it,” she said.
Love Ossan drew criticism from pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho, who claimed his “promotion of homosexuality” violated China’s three-child policy as well as Hong Kong’s national security law.
