Regional Press Awards winner becomes BBC WM breakfast host

A former Regional Press Awards winner has become the new BBC breakfast radio presenter.

BBC Radio WM has unveiled Rakeem Omar, formerly of the Birmingham Mail, as host of its 6am-10am programme.

Rakeem, pictured, worked for the Mail as a community reporter between May 2019 and June last year.

While there, he won the Reporting Communities award at the 2019 Regional Press Awards.

Rakeem simultaneously worked for BBC Radio WM as a producer and also presented its Tuesday evening show.

He took up his new duties on Tuesday, replacing Elise Evans.

Speaking to Radio Today, he said: ‘I can’t believe this is happening. I started on BBC Radio WM as a guest on the evening shows, so taking over the breakfast show is so surreal.

“I feel blessed to be able to wake up the people of the West Midlands. I am ready to take this amazing opportunity and start this new radio journey.

Patrick Hart, BBC Radio WM Editor, said: “We are really delighted to have secured the services of Rakeem for our new breakfast show, his dynamic style and delivery is exactly what we need so that we seek to attract an even wider audience to the BBC. WM radio.

“We will bring the stories that matter in an exciting new format across the West Midlands.”
