Where is the host of the Ex-Today show today? Update
Matt Lauer, the popular host of “The Today Show” on NBC Network, was fired in 2017 after several allegations of sexual misconduct were brought against him. The dismissal follows allegations against numerous media figures including Harvey Weinstein and, later, Louis CK and Kevin Spacey. What started with a single complaint against Matt quickly led several current and former employees to speak out about Matt’s behavior with them, highlighting a seemingly very problematic work environment for staff members. So if you’re wondering what has happened to Matt since he was fired, here’s what we know.
Who is Matt Lauer?
Matt Lauer joined NBC in 1992 after working for various local television stations. He joined ‘The Today Show’ full time in January 1994 as a co-host. Matt has also co-hosted several Summer and Winter Olympics as well as Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. In November 2017, NBC executives fired Matt after an employee reported inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. The statement released by NBC mentioned that they had reason to believe this was not the only incident.
The employee was Brooke Nevils, who then introduced herself and spoke about her experience. This was published in a book written by journalist Ronan Farrow. In it, Brooke said the incident happened in Sochi, Russia, during the Winter Olympics. She noted that Matt invited her to his hotel room after a few drinks at the bar. Once she got on, he anal raped her. Brooke added that she had sex with Matt after returning to New York, but said it was transactional.
Matt denied the sexual assault charge and said the meeting in Sochi was consensual. Shortly after his dismissal, several other reports emerged regarding Matt’s allegedly disturbing behavior with female employees. A former employee said Matt invited her to his office once in 2001, locked the door and asked her to unbutton her blouse. According to her, he then sexually assaulted her. The employee then said she passed out and woke up on her office floor, and Matt asked her assistant to take her to a nurse.
It was also alleged that Matt had previously gifted a co-worker a sex toy, and several other accounts claimed he would invite women to his hotel rooms while he was on a mission for the Olympics. In December 2017, Addie Zinone, a former NBC employee, said she had a brief consensual sex with Matt. Yet she constituted it as an “abuse of power” started by him. Many employees also claimed to have complained about this behavior, but no action was taken.
Where’s Matt Lauer now?
After the allegations surfaced, Matt released a statement which, in part, said, “Some of what is said about me is wrong or misinterpreted, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I hold dear. Matt and his wife, Annette Roque, have since divorced and share joint custody of their three children. He is said to be in a relationship with Shamin Abas and appears to live in the Hamptons, New York.
